I got my first guitar lesson Monday (well, not the FIRST, I had a few last year, but that's another story) and my teacher gave me four songs to work on until my next lesson. Here they are... with my little comments...
Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri
This is actually the hardest song she gave me... the vocals are...ok I guess, but it's all the complicated chord changes. It's funny because my friends thinks that the strum patterns come easier to her than the chord changes, but the chord changes come really easily to me... except for this song :P but I like it, it's really pretty :)
Smile by Uncle Kracker
This song has a funny story behind it (well, at least I think it's funny...)...
So, at the beginning of the school year, I loved this song. My friend Lydia thought it was annoying. I listened to it every day during Prep class. Eventually, I got tired of it, and I think it's annoying, also. But now my teacher wants me to learn it. :P
Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer
I heard this song on the radio a couple times... wasn't my favorite song ever... but I think it's pretty now.. :)
Our Song by Taylor Swift
I absolutely LOVEE this song!! Can't wait to learn it!!! <3 :)
Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Oh, Henry
"Haloo, Henry. Fine day isn't it?" said Julius.
"Are you speaking Finnish?" asked Henry.
"Why, kylla, I am! How did you know?"
"Well, you're wearing a fish fin... so I guessed that you are speaking Fin+Fish= Finnish."
"OH, Henry!"
Only some people will get this... Oh, Henry was a candy bar or old comic strip, I believe...
So, yeah. I'm not that good at creating repartee, so here is a pun that my friend told me, if that counts...
A group of chess fanatics come into the lobby of a hotel. They start bragging REALLY loud about winning their tournament championship. Then the hotel manager comes into the lobby and says, "Hello, will you all please leave?"
And then the chess fanatics say:
"Why?!"
And the hotel manager says...
"Because, I don't like chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer!"
BUT, here is my version of the joke:
A group of chess fanatics enter an Australian-themed restaurant. After discussing their strategies they were going to use in the tournament after lunch, they realize that they were late. They ran out of the restaurant in a hurry. They were just about to drive away, when the waiter runs out of the restaurant, and yells, "WAIT!"
"WHY?! WE'RE LATE!" the chess fanatics yell back.
The waiter says...
"You forgot to pay your check, mate!"
I hope this counts! :)
Hahahaha! :) sorry, I find that highly amusing. :) (improper spelling intended)

Nobel Peace Prize
In Language Arts, I have been researching the winners of the nobel peace prize this year. Their names are: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee, and Tawakkul Karman. Both Ellen and Leymah lived in Liberia when they won the award, and Tawakkul lived in Yemen. They were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for "their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work. Ellen's specific contribution was that she was the President of Liberia, and now has to be re-elected, so she had advantages. **** put L.G.'s and T.K.'s contributions here!!!***
My questions that I had when I first started researching them:
1. What did Tawakku do? (I had no information from the start from the website www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace)
2. What did Leymah do? (same reason as #1)
3. How did they promote woman's safety?
4. how did the three get discovered, what media channel did they use?
5. How did people react to their campaign?
Specific research on each individual:
Leymah Gbowee:

What issue(s) caused this person to take action? Liberia's 14-year civil war.
Was the issue local or global? Explain. Global- women should be safe and not just in Africa. There should be peace between both men and women.
How did this person take action? She gathered up a large group of women and they started picketing, fasting, and praying.
What media channels did he or she use to take action? How did he or she use each? She has been a commissioner and reconciliation commission. She is also the executive director of the Women in Peace and Security Network
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf:

What issue(s) caused this person to take action? To encourage women's rights.
Was the issue local or global? Explain. *Same for all- see this answer on Leymah's*
How did the person take action? Ellen is the president of Liberia. She made a policy against corruption and she believes in free education for children.
What media channels did he or she use to take action? How did he or she use each? She is the president of Liberia, so she could let everyone know about this movement.
Tawakkol Karmen:
Source: www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/oct/07/johnson-sirleaf-gbowee-karmen-nobel
What issue(s) caused this person to take action? She wanted to stop Liberia's civil war like Leymah, and she joined the struggle for women's rights and for democracy and peace in Yemen.
Was the issue local or global? Explain. *Same as the answer for Leymah's question.*
How did the person take action? She organized women to end to religious dividing lines and the long war and to promote women's participation in elections.
What media channels did he or she use to take action? How did he or she use each? She founded the group Women Journalists Without Chains. Also, some bloggers supported the campaign.
Answers to my questions listed earlier:
1. She campaigned with a large group of women.
2. The President made policies and they picketed.
3. Same as #1
4. President, blogging
5. They supported it.
How does this person inspire you?
They all inspire me in many ways. They inspire me to take action to help any way I can. I was also inspired by Ellen's story. She became the first female president in Africa. That tells me that anything is possible and women can be as powerful as men. They all refuted the stereotype of women not being important. (Vocab word!(: )
